Born into a musical family backround in Providence RI, Joe's dad played guitar, banjo, ukelele and harmonica, as well as being a pretty fair singer. By the time Joe was 17 and a senior in high school he was playing guitar 4 nights a week in a top 40 band at a nightclub on Thames Street in Newport Rhode Island ..The musical journey continued as Joe was drafted into the Army but was soon discoverd in the rec center on his base by a USO show where he was put into a rock n' roll music group entertaining troops. Two years later he was back in Newport RI and southeast Massachusetts playing and singing in a doo wop/country rock band working 7 nights a week...
Disco became the rage in the mid 70's and Joe became a funk bass player for several years in a very popular band based in New Bedford Mass.. He then joined a road band playing Sheraton Hotels all across the country and finally got off the bus in San Diego California around 1980, where he began playing in a duo along the ocean and harbor resorts. Joe's partner in the duo could do a great Paul McCartney and Joe was a natural at singing like John Lennon so they started doing all Beatle songs and called themselves The Beat Bros.. It wasn't long before they became the hottest act in San Diego/La Jolla and the island of Coronado. Two years passed when an agency in Los Angeles, which had several Beatlemania troupes traveling the country and the Caribbean signed Joe and his partner to be part of one of those shows. This was where Joe got his first experience with the technology of backing tracks, which he would incorporate into his JOE MACK SAX show years later.
After two seasons Joe returned to his native Rhode Island, got married and started his own 4 piece band which he aptly named The Beat Bros. (why not?!). He played lead guitar and sang while sometimes playing tenor saxophone. For twenty years The Beat Bros. were one of the best classic rock and oldies band in the area and played all through Rhode Island and Massachusetts. During that time Joe also became a Christian and found himself being the music director of his bible based church in West Warwick, R.I. in which he is still actively involved. Sadly, the freezing cold New England winters and a serious bout with kidney cancer finally made Joe hung up his guns and retire from the band a few years ago. He certainly missed the music and the creativity but he had no place else to turn.
